Canadian swimming star Summer McIntosh produced a dominant performance to win the women’s 400m individual medley at the Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine, California, setting a new championship record in the process. The 19-year-old Canadian led throughout the final and touched the wall in 4:28.01. Australia’s Jenna Forrester took silver in 4:31.50, while Argentina’s Agostina Hein earned bronze in 4:32.54. McIntosh’s performance broke the previous Pan Pacific Championships record of 4:31.99, set by American Elizabeth Beisel in 2014. At the beginning of the race, the Canadian was even swimming slightly inside the pace of her own world record before building a commanding advantage over the rest of the field.

The victory came just one day after McIntosh suffered a rare defeat in the 200m freestyle. Australia’s Lani Pallister won that final in 1:53.67, narrowly beating McIntosh, who finished second in 1:53.86. The Canadian made no secret of her disappointment with the result, but quickly shifted her attention to one of her strongest events. McIntosh is the world-record holder in the 400m individual medley and has established herself as one of the most versatile swimmers of her generation, competing at the highest level across freestyle, butterfly and individual medley events. Her performance in Irvine demonstrated her ability to recover immediately from a disappointing result and return to winning form in her next final.

The 400m individual medley victory gives McIntosh her first individual gold medal of these Pan Pacific Championships and strengthens her position as one of the leading names at the competition. Her 4:28.01 was also one of the fastest performances ever recorded in the event. The Canadian’s programme in Irvine is not over, with further opportunities for medals still ahead. She is scheduled to compete in the 400m freestyle and 200m individual medley as she continues a demanding programme at one of the most important international swimming competitions ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
