Arsenal made an impressive start to the new English football season with a commanding 3-0 victory over Manchester City to win the 2026 Community Shield. The match was played on August 16 at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, bringing together Premier League champions Arsenal and FA Cup winners Manchester City.
Mikel Arteta’s side could hardly have started better. Riccardo Calafiori opened the scoring after just 23 seconds, finishing a move created by Myles Lewis-Skelly. It was the fastest goal in the Community Shield for 58 years and immediately put Manchester City under pressure.
The early advantage allowed Arsenal to settle into their game, while City struggled to find space against a well-organised defence. Erling Haaland was largely kept away from dangerous positions and Arsenal looked considerably more threatening when moving forward.
In the 28th minute, Arsenal doubled their lead. Kai Havertz found the net after another effective attacking move, with new signing Christos Tzolis involved in creating the opportunity. Arsenal went into the interval with a comfortable 2-0 advantage.
Any hopes of a Manchester City comeback were dealt another blow immediately after the break. In the 48th minute, captain Martin Ødegaard scored Arsenal’s third goal, again following good work from Tzolis.
The Greek international was one of Arsenal’s standout performers. Tzolis contributed two assists and made an immediate impact in one of his first major appearances for the club. Ødegaard was named player of the match after another influential performance in Arsenal’s midfield.
Manchester City were unable to find a response. Although they had periods of possession, they created few clear opportunities and Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya completed the match without conceding.
The result was also significant because it marked Enzo Maresca’s first competitive match as Manchester City manager after succeeding Pep Guardiola. His new team endured a difficult afternoon against an Arsenal side that looked sharper and more organised.
For Arsenal, the victory provides another trophy following their Premier League triumph and gives the team an encouraging start to the 2026/27 campaign. Arteta’s players demonstrated the same defensive organisation and efficiency that helped them win the league, while several newer members of the squad also made an impact.
The Community Shield traditionally opens the English football season by bringing together the Premier League champions and FA Cup winners. This year’s match was staged at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium rather than Wembley.
Arsenal have particularly good memories of facing Manchester City in this competition. In 2023, the Gunners defeated City on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Three years later there was no need for a shootout, with Arsenal deciding the contest during normal time.
The 3-0 victory sends Arsenal into the new campaign with another trophy and considerable confidence. Calafiori provided the spectacular start, Havertz doubled the advantage and Ødegaard completed an emphatic performance shortly after half-time.
Arsenal will now turn their attention to the beginning of their Premier League title defence, while Manchester City face the task of responding quickly after a difficult first competitive match under Maresca.
