Iran has outlined six major conditions that Tehran says must be addressed by the United States as part of any lasting peace agreement and broader settlement of the conflict.
The Iranian position was presented by Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi. Tehran’s proposal goes beyond simply ending military operations and includes political, economic and security demands intended to form the basis of a longer-term agreement. One of Iran’s central demands is the lifting of US sanctions. Tehran is also seeking the release of Iranian funds frozen abroad, arguing that access to these assets must be restored as part of any comprehensive settlement.
Iran is also demanding an end to the US naval blockade and the withdrawal of American military forces from areas close to Iranian territory.Another major condition concerns the fighting itself. Tehran wants hostilities to end on all fronts, with particular emphasis on Lebanon, and is seeking guarantees that military operations will not resume. One of the most difficult issues in future negotiations could be Iran’s demand for compensation for damage caused during the war. Tehran maintains that reparations should form part of a final settlement.
The conditions come at a critical stage in diplomatic efforts surrounding the conflict. Despite deep disagreements between Washington and Tehran, regional mediators have continued attempts to establish a framework capable of producing a more durable settlement. At the same time, negotiations involving Iran and Oman over the future of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz have continued. Iranian officials have indicated that an agreement on arrangements for the strategic waterway is close, but Tehran has stressed that such an agreement alone would not be enough for the strait to fully reopen.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most important elements of the confrontation because of its crucial role in global oil and gas supplies. Disruption to shipping through the waterway has consequences extending far beyond the Middle East and can influence international energy prices and inflation.Significant differences nevertheless remain between the positions of Washington and Tehran. The United States is seeking security guarantees and restrictions related to Iran’s nuclear programme, while Tehran continues to place sanctions relief, access to frozen assets, an end to the blockade, US troop withdrawal and war reparations among its principal demands.
Whether the six Iranian conditions can become the foundation for a broader compromise remains uncertain. A breakthrough, however, could significantly reshape the security situation in the Middle East and reduce pressure on international energy markets.
