Shia LaBeouf is once again attracting attention over his relationship with alcohol after new court documents revealed that the actor self-reported drinking every day. The disclosure comes several months after his arrest in New Orleans during Mardi Gras celebrations and raises new questions surrounding the 40-year-old “Transformers” star, who has spoken publicly in the past about alcohol, sobriety and his efforts to change his behaviour. The documents concern LaBeouf’s compliance with the terms of his probation. They indicate that he has been checking in with his probation supervisor as required and has provided evidence that he is expected to complete anger-management and substance-abuse treatment programs by next month. At the same time, the documents state that LaBeouf declined mental-health treatment and self-reported that he drinks alcohol daily. The disclosure is particularly notable because of comments he made earlier this year. Following the New Orleans incident, LaBeouf said he did not believe alcohol was the fundamental cause of his behaviour and did not consider himself to have a drinking problem. He instead suggested that anger and ego were more central issues. The latest information does not by itself establish an addiction diagnosis, and it would be inappropriate for media reports to make such a medical determination. It does, however, confirm that LaBeouf continues to consume alcohol during a period in which the court has required him to undergo substance-abuse treatment. His latest legal problems began in February when he was arrested following confrontations around bars in New Orleans during Mardi Gras. In June, LaBeouf pleaded guilty to three misdemeanor battery charges and received two years of probation. The conditions included anger-management training and treatment addressing alcohol and substance use.

The actor has previously spoken openly about attempts to become sober and change his life. In 2022, he said he had remained sober for more than 600 days, appearing to mark a significant change after years of highly publicised personal difficulties. There is nevertheless another important part of the story: according to the available records, LaBeouf has been complying with other probation requirements and is working toward completing the court-ordered programs. His next hearing is scheduled for September 23, although the documents indicate that he is not expected to appear personally because he will be working on a film.
