One of Mexico’s most unusual cultural traditions has once again captured international attention after the mayor of the town of San Pedro Huamelula symbolically married a female caiman, a crocodile-like reptile, during an annual ceremony believed to bring prosperity and good fortune to the community.
The colourful event took place in the southern state of Oaxaca, where local residents celebrated with traditional music, dancing and festive processions through the streets. The reptile, dressed in a white wedding gown and decorated with flowers, represents a princess in an ancient Indigenous legend. 0
The symbolic marriage is more than 230 years old and commemorates the historic union between the Chontal and Huave Indigenous communities, ending a long-standing conflict.
