Japan has secured another place on UNESCO’s World Heritage List after the Asuka-Fujiwara Palace Sites in Nara Prefecture received official recognition during the latest meeting of the World Heritage Committee. The decision highlights the global historical importance of the region, where Japan’s earliest state institutions were established.
The heritage area includes the remains of ancient imperial palaces, temples, burial sites and archaeological landmarks dating back to the Asuka period, a crucial era in the formation of Japanese government, culture and society.
Japanese officials welcomed the announcement, saying the UNESCO designation will strengthen preservation efforts while encouraging more visitors from around the world to explore one of the country’s most significant historical regions.
Historians believe the recognition will increase international awareness of Japan’s ancient capitals and support further archaeological research, restoration projects and educational programmes connected with the nation’s early history.
