Doctors have successfully used an innovative non-invasive ultrasound procedure to treat a rare pregnancy complication affecting identical twins, offering new hope for families facing the condition.
The treatment targets twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), a disorder that develops when identical twins sharing the same placenta receive an uneven blood supply. Without treatment, the condition can threaten the lives of both babies.
Instead of using surgery or inserting instruments into the womb, specialists employed highly focused ultrasound waves to seal tiny blood vessels inside the placenta. The procedure was completed in around 20 minutes and required no surgical intervention.
Among the patients was Brioney Garrett, whose daughters Nancy and Margo were successfully treated before birth. The twins were later delivered in good health and are now four years old.
Researchers reported encouraging results from the initial clinical study, with the technique successfully blocking abnormal blood flow in most treated vessels and no significant side effects being observed. Scientists say larger clinical trials will be needed before the procedure becomes widely available.
Medical experts believe the technology could represent a major step forward in fetal medicine by providing a less invasive option for treating one of the most serious complications of identical twin pregnancies.
