Formula 1 is set to make a long-awaited return to Malaysia after nearly a decade away, with the iconic Sepang International Circuit confirmed as the venue for a special race replacing the cancelled Bahrain Grand Prix. The announcement was made jointly by Formula 1 and the FIA as part of efforts to preserve the 2026 championship calendar.
The event will take place from 2 to 4 October under the official title Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. The agreement was reached between Formula 1, the FIA and the governments of Bahrain and Malaysia following the cancellation of the original Bahrain race.
Sepang hosted Formula 1 from 1999 until 2017 and earned a reputation as one of the sport’s most demanding circuits thanks to its fast layout, long straights and unpredictable tropical weather. Its return has been welcomed by teams, drivers and fans around the world.
Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali said the agreement demonstrates the championship’s ability to adapt quickly while maintaining a competitive calendar. He also thanked the governments of Bahrain and Malaysia for their cooperation in making the event possible.
Ticket information will be released at a later date. Once final approval is completed, Sepang will officially stage its first Formula 1 race since 2017, marking a significant comeback for one of the championship’s most popular venues.
