Spain midfielder Dani Olmo has strongly disputed Argentina’s account of the incidents that followed the FIFA World Cup final, insisting that key details presented by the Argentine camp do not reflect what actually happened after the match.
His comments came after Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala apologised for the confrontation but claimed it involved only a shove triggered by something Olmo had allegedly said. The Spanish international denied making any such remarks and argued that the explanation was not truthful.
Olmo stressed that professional footballers have a responsibility to set a positive example for young fans around the world, adding that respect and sportsmanship should never disappear, regardless of the emotions surrounding a major final.
The heated scenes after Spain’s World Cup triumph remain under investigation by FIFA. The governing body is examining the conduct of several Argentine players and staff members, with disciplinary action still a possibility.
