Xiaomi has officially introduced HyperOS 4, the latest generation of its operating environment for smartphones, tablets and connected devices. The platform is based on Android 17 and continues the Chinese company’s strategy of gradually bringing its different products into a unified software ecosystem. The first beta rollout began in China on August 14, 2026, while Xiaomi has not yet announced an official timetable for the international release.
One of the most visible changes is the redesigned interface. Xiaomi has introduced more transparent, glass-like elements, lighting effects and smoother animations across the system. The lock screen, notifications, folders and various parts of the home screen have also been updated. The aim is to give HyperOS a more modern appearance while keeping the interface familiar to existing users.
Performance is another major focus. Xiaomi says HyperOS 4 includes improvements to application launch speeds, animation fluidity and system responsiveness during prolonged use. According to figures presented by the company, some applications can open up to around 18% faster. Camera operations have also been optimised, including faster HDR image processing and reduced time needed to launch the camera application. The actual improvements experienced by users will depend on the individual device and its hardware.
Artificial intelligence plays an even more central role in HyperOS 4. Xiaomi has integrated a new generation of its AI assistant, supported by the company’s MiMo model. The system can assist with voice transcription, organisation of notes and information, contextual actions and interaction with compatible smart devices.
This represents a broader change in Xiaomi’s approach to AI. Instead of treating artificial intelligence as a separate application, the company is integrating AI capabilities throughout different parts of the operating environment. The goal is for devices to better understand what users are doing and offer relevant functions based on the information and content currently being used.

HyperOS also has a broader purpose than simply operating smartphones. Xiaomi is developing the platform as a common software foundation for an ecosystem that includes phones, tablets, wearable devices, smart-home products and vehicles. The company is gradually expanding communication between these different categories so that information and functions can move more easily from one device to another.
The transition to HyperOS began in 2023, when Xiaomi introduced the platform as the successor to MIUI. MIUI had been the main software interface for Xiaomi smartphones for more than a decade, but the rapid expansion of the company’s product ecosystem created the need for a platform with a wider scope. HyperOS was designed to connect multiple categories of devices rather than simply provide a new interface for Android smartphones.
The first HyperOS 4 beta wave includes some of Xiaomi and Redmi’s newest hardware. Xiaomi 17 Ultra, Xiaomi 17 Pro Max, Xiaomi 17 Pro and Xiaomi 17 are among the first smartphones receiving the test software, alongside Redmi K90 Pro Max and Redmi K90. Xiaomi Pad 8 Pro and Xiaomi Pad 8 are also included. Further groups of devices are scheduled to join the Chinese beta programme later in August and September.
It is important, however, to distinguish between the announcement of HyperOS 4 and its general availability. Users outside China will not immediately receive the new operating environment. The initial release is part of the Chinese beta programme, and Xiaomi has not yet confirmed a final rollout schedule for global versions of Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO devices.
HyperOS 4 demonstrates the direction Xiaomi is taking as it moves further away from the MIUI era – towards a single software environment in which the smartphone is no longer the only centre of the ecosystem. Mobile devices, smart-home products and vehicles are increasingly being connected, while artificial intelligence is becoming another layer linking these different products.
For users, the key question will now be which of the new features will reach international versions and older devices. The first beta tests are focused on newer hardware, and the wider rollout will show how noticeable the promised improvements in speed, AI functionality and cross-device integration will be in everyday use.
