Two men aged 23 and 31 have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a devastating house fire on Birchington Avenue in Grangetown, near Middlesbrough. Emergency services were called at around 5:23am, with two people, including a child, confirmed dead. A 48-year-old woman remains critically ill at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, while three other people suffered injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening. Six fire engines and an incident command unit were sent to the scene. Neighbours described desperate attempts to help those trapped inside, with one local resident staying beside an injured woman who had jumped from an upstairs window until paramedics arrived.
Cleveland Police are treating the incident as a murder investigation and say they are keeping an open mind, including over possible links to wider organised crime. The fire happened not far from the scene of the A66 collision several days earlier in which five young men and two police officers were killed, although police have not confirmed a direct connection between the two incidents. Officers have increased patrols in Grangetown to reassure residents, while specially trained officers are supporting the families affected. Cleveland Police and Cleveland Fire Brigade are continuing their joint investigation into the circumstances and cause of the blaze.
