High-protein meals have become one of the biggest food trends, with many fast-food chains promoting protein-rich burgers, wraps and pizzas as healthier choices. However, nutrition experts warn that a “high-protein” label does not automatically mean a meal is good for your health. 0

Protein plays an important role in building muscle, supporting recovery and helping people feel full for longer. But specialists say it is equally important to consider calories, saturated fat, salt, sugar and fibre before deciding whether a meal is truly nutritious. 1

For example, some burgers can provide around 50 grams of protein while also containing nearly 750 calories, high levels of saturated fat and more salt than recommended for a single meal. Similar patterns can be found in fried chicken meals and large pizzas, which often combine impressive protein content with excessive calories and sodium. 2

Dietitians recommend choosing lean protein sources whenever possible. Grilled chicken, vegetables, wholegrain bread and lighter sauces are generally better options than processed meats, deep-fried foods and heavy dressings. Smaller portions can also help reduce overall calorie and salt intake. 3

Experts stress that eating fast food occasionally is not necessarily harmful, but making informed choices is essential. A balanced meal should provide quality protein while limiting unhealthy fats, added sugars and excessive salt.

The key message is simple: high protein alone should never be the only factor when choosing a meal. Reading nutritional information and aiming for a balanced combination of protein, vegetables and whole-food ingredients remains the healthiest approach.
