A powerful earthquake has shaken southern Peru and was felt across a wide area of the country, including locations hundreds of kilometres from the epicentre. The U.S. Geological Survey measured the earthquake at magnitude 6.7, while Peru’s Geophysical Institute reported a substantially higher magnitude of 7.2. Differences between initial estimates from seismological agencies can occur because they use different measurements and analytical methods.
The earthquake struck on August 20 at around 1 p.m. local time in the Andes. According to the USGS, the epicentre was approximately 38 kilometres northwest of Upahuacho in Parinacochas province, Ayacucho region, at a depth of about 67 kilometres. Peru’s Geophysical Institute placed the epicentre around 35 kilometres north of Coracora and calculated a considerably greater depth of approximately 108 kilometres.
The shaking was felt across several parts of southern and central Peru, including Ayacucho, Ica, Arequipa, Huancavelica, Apurimac and Cusco. Tremors were even reported in the capital Lima, hundreds of kilometres from the epicentral area. Residents in numerous locations left buildings as a precaution.
Authorities initially reported no casualties or significant damage, but subsequent assessments identified injuries and structural impacts. At least two people were reported injured in Coracora during evacuations. Inspections have also identified damage affecting homes, healthcare facilities and a school.
At least 22 houses and six health centres have been reported damaged, while other public infrastructure has also been affected in some communities. Rockfalls occurred in mountainous areas, creating additional risks for roads and isolated settlements. Authorities are continuing their assessments and the figures may change as information arrives from more remote locations.
Despite the earthquake’s strength, its relatively considerable depth appears to have limited its destructive impact at the surface. Deeper earthquakes can be felt across very large areas, while sometimes producing less intense shaking close to the epicentre than a much shallower earthquake of comparable magnitude.
Peruvian naval authorities confirmed that the earthquake did not pose a tsunami threat. This is an important distinction for a country with an extensive Pacific coastline, where powerful undersea earthquakes can under certain conditions generate dangerous waves.
Peru lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the most seismically active regions on Earth. The Nazca tectonic plate is being forced beneath the South American plate along the western margin of the continent, generating enormous geological stresses and making major earthquakes a recurring part of Peru’s history.
The latest earthquake comes only around a month after another destructive earthquake struck the Peruvian Andes in July, killing several people and damaging numerous buildings. The events occurred in different areas and should not automatically be treated as part of the same seismic sequence.
There are currently no indications of a large-scale disaster following the latest earthquake, but assessments in remote mountain communities are continuing. Information from these locations can take longer to reach national authorities, meaning the final scale of the damage may not be known until inspections are completed. The powerful tremor is another reminder of why earthquake-resistant construction and emergency preparedness remain particularly important in Peru, a country located along one of the world’s most active tectonic zones.
