Electricity has been fully restored across Georgia after a nationwide blackout left most of the country, including the capital Tbilisi, without power on Wednesday evening. According to the Georgian State Electrosystem (GSE), restoration efforts were completed within hours, while authorities continue investigating the exact cause of the outage.
The blackout began at around 8:00 p.m. local time, affecting major cities and disrupting traffic lights, public transportation, businesses, and mobile communications in several regions. Hospitals and other critical facilities switched to backup generators to maintain essential services.
Georgian officials said the outage coincided with testing at the Enguri hydroelectric power station, which had been carried out to identify vulnerabilities in the national electricity grid after two major power failures last month. Authorities stressed that investigators have not yet concluded whether the tests directly caused the blackout.
The latest incident has renewed concerns about the resilience of Georgia’s energy infrastructure. Energy experts note that repeated large-scale outages in recent weeks highlight the need for further investment in grid modernization and improved system reliability.
The Georgian government said a full technical review is underway to determine the exact sequence of events and to prevent similar nationwide outages in the future.
