Elon Musk has outlined a new phase of SpaceX’s long-term space strategy, announcing that humanoid robots are expected to become the first builders of a future settlement on the Moon before humans arrive.
According to Musk’s vision, Tesla’s Optimus robots would be responsible for constructing essential infrastructure, including power systems, habitats and other facilities needed to support future astronauts. He argues that robots are better suited for the first missions because they can operate in hazardous environments without the life-support requirements of human crews.
The Moon has become SpaceX’s immediate priority due to its proximity to Earth and the opportunity to test technologies that could later be used for missions to Mars. Company officials say a permanent lunar settlement could serve as a stepping stone toward long-term human expansion deeper into the Solar System.
While the plans remain highly ambitious, they still depend on the continued development of SpaceX’s Starship launch system and other technologies required for transporting heavy equipment and supporting long-duration missions beyond Earth.
