More than 2,000 humanoid robots head to Beijing for a global technology showdown

Beijing is preparing to host the second World Humanoid Robot Games, an event that transforms sporting competition into a testing ground for some of the fastest-developing technologies in robotics. From August 22 to 26, the National Speed Skating Oval, known as the “Ice Ribbon,” will welcome 666 teams and 2,056 robots. Participation has expanded dramatically from the inaugural Games, which featured 280 teams. The 2026 edition will include 51 events and 1,301 competition sessions, bringing together robots developed by companies, universities and research institutions. The scale of the event reflects the rapid expansion of the humanoid robotics sector and growing efforts to test machines outside controlled laboratory environments.

The programme goes far beyond simply watching robots run around a track. Machines will compete in athletics, football, weightlifting, martial arts, dancesport and other disciplines designed to test balance, speed, coordination and mechanical durability. Scenario-based competitions have also expanded significantly, from six events at the inaugural Games to 21 this year. Robots will face practical challenges connected with areas such as emergency response and hotel services, while precision tasks will include picking up beans and tightening screws. Autonomy requirements have also become stricter: with limited exceptions, robots participating in track and other competitive events must now complete their tasks fully autonomously. These challenges make the Games more than a technology spectacle, allowing engineers to compare how different machines perform tasks that could eventually become part of real workplaces.

The event comes as China continues to invest heavily in humanoid robotics and attempts to move the technology from impressive demonstrations toward practical applications. Robots are increasingly being developed for manufacturing, logistics, services and other environments, but they still need to demonstrate sufficient reliability, autonomy and economic viability for widespread deployment. Beijing’s competition therefore offers something more valuable than medals. By placing machines under pressure in sporting and realistic scenarios, developers can test their precision, endurance and ability to respond to changing conditions. The World Humanoid Robot Games are gradually becoming a public laboratory where the future role of humanoid machines can be evaluated through practical performance rather than demonstrations alone.
