Mikel Merino has written his name into World Cup history after once again delivering a decisive late goal for Spain in the knockout stage.
The Spanish midfielder came off the bench and scored in the 88th minute to secure a 2-1 victory over Belgium in the quarter-finals. His strike sent Spain into the last four, where they will face France.
Merino had already played the role of match-winner in the previous round. Against Portugal, he entered as a substitute and scored in stoppage time to give Spain a 1-0 victory.
With his two decisive goals, the Arsenal midfielder became the first player in World Cup history to score match-winning goals as a substitute in two separate knockout matches at the same tournament.
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente praised Merino’s ability to adapt and contribute in crucial moments. The midfielder, meanwhile, insisted that his late impact was the result of preparation and belief that his opportunity would come.
Spain now turn their attention to the semi-final against France as their pursuit of another world title continues.
