Italy has expelled two Russian military attachés from the Russian Embassy in Rome following an investigation into alleged espionage activities. The decision was announced by Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, who described the case as a serious interference in the country’s national security.
According to Italian authorities, the diplomats were linked to a network suspected of gathering sensitive information, including material related to NATO military structures and operations. One of the expelled officials had reportedly shown interest in the Alliance’s mission in Bulgaria, giving the case broader regional significance.
The two Russian representatives have been ordered to leave Italy within a short deadline. The move follows the arrest of former Italian security officials suspected of passing information to Russian contacts.
Moscow has rejected the accusations and said it will respond to Rome’s decision. Russian officials described the expulsions as a hostile step that would not remain unanswered.
The case further increases tensions between Russia and NATO member states amid growing concerns over hybrid operations, espionage and attempts to influence European institutions and defence structures.
