Hybrid Aircraft Reaches Over 9,000 Metres in Historic Test Flight

A major milestone in aviation technology has been achieved after an experimental hybrid-electric aircraft successfully climbed above 9,000 metres for the first time, reaching the cruising altitude typically used by commercial passenger aircraft. During the test campaign, the aircraft remained in hybrid-electric operation for more than two hours, demonstrating the reliability and performance of the new propulsion system.

The project was developed through a partnership between GE Aerospace, NASA, BETA Technologies and Boeing. Engineers modified a Saab 340B regional aircraft by combining a conventional gas turbine engine with a megawatt-class electric propulsion system. The technology intelligently distributes power between the two energy sources during take-off, climb and cruise to improve efficiency while reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

The propulsion system incorporates high-performance electric motors, power converters, advanced cooling systems and energy storage technology. Before the flight programme began, the equipment underwent extensive testing at NASA facilities under simulated conditions equivalent to altitudes of up to 45,000 feet, helping engineers validate the system before moving to real-world operations.

Researchers believe the knowledge gained during the programme will support the development of the next generation of commercial aircraft engines capable of significantly lowering fuel burn, operating costs and carbon emissions. Hybrid-electric propulsion is widely regarded as one of the key technologies that could shape cleaner and more efficient air travel over the coming decades.
