Summer is the perfect season for outdoor activities, but exercising in extreme heat requires extra caution. High temperatures and humidity place additional stress on the body, making dehydration and heat exhaustion much more likely if proper precautions are not taken. 0

Health experts recommend scheduling workouts during the coolest parts of the day, preferably early in the morning or after sunset. Avoid training between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., when the sun is strongest and temperatures reach their highest levels. 1

Hydration is one of the most important factors for safe summer exercise. Drink water before, during and after your workout, and consider electrolyte drinks during longer or more intense sessions to replace minerals lost through sweat. Even mild dehydration can reduce performance and increase the risk of heat-related illness. 2

Choosing the right clothing also makes a significant difference. Wear lightweight, breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics in light colors that help your body cool naturally. A cap, sunglasses and sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher provide additional protection from harmful UV rays. 3

If you’re running or cycling outdoors, select routes with shade whenever possible and reduce your workout intensity. During hot weather it’s better to train based on how your body feels rather than trying to maintain your usual pace or personal best times. 4

Pay close attention to warning signs such as dizziness, nausea, excessive fatigue, headache, muscle cramps or confusion. If any of these symptoms appear, stop exercising immediately, move to a cool place, drink fluids and seek medical attention if symptoms become severe. Heat exhaustion can quickly develop into life-threatening heat stroke. 5

Swimming, indoor gym sessions or workouts in air-conditioned environments are excellent alternatives on extremely hot days. Staying active throughout the summer is important, but adjusting your routine to weather conditions is the safest way to protect your health while maintaining your fitness goals. 6
