How Space Changes the Human Brain, According to New Research

Long-term space travel has a remarkable effect on the human brain. Recent studies show that in microgravity the brain shifts its position inside the skull, while regions responsible for balance, movement and spatial awareness adapt to the unique conditions of space.

Without Earth’s gravity, body fluids move toward the head, increasing pressure inside the skull and contributing to vision changes, headaches and balance disorders. Researchers have found that after extended missions the brain moves slightly upward and backward, and astronauts often need weeks or even months to fully readjust after returning to Earth.

Scientists also emphasize the brain’s remarkable ability to adapt through neuroplasticity. This allows astronauts to gradually recover normal coordination and movement after landing, despite the temporary difficulties many experience during the first days back on Earth.

Understanding these changes is considered essential for future missions to the Moon and Mars. Researchers believe that developing new ways to protect brain function during long-duration spaceflight will be a key challenge for the next generation of human space exploration.
