Germany plans to withdraw its military personnel from the field camp near Erbil International Airport in northern Iraq by the end of September as part of a gradual reduction of its military presence in the region.
According to German officials, the decision follows a reassessment of the security situation and the changing structure of the international mission in Iraq. While the military camp will be closed, a small team of German advisers is expected to remain in Erbil to continue supporting and advising Kurdish security forces.
German authorities stressed that the move does not signal an end to cooperation with Iraq or the Kurdish Regional Government. Berlin says it remains committed to contributing to regional stability and counter-terrorism efforts through advisory and training missions.
The withdrawal is also in line with the broader transition of the international coalition’s mission in Iraq, as several partner countries continue adjusting their military deployments in the region.
