Four days without power: USS Benfold breakdown leaves 300 sailors facing harsh conditions at sea

The U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer USS Benfold, carrying about 300 sailors, suffered a major engineering failure that left the vessel without power for four days while operating in the Pacific. The incident occurred on July 24, 2026, when a problem involving the ship’s generators caused a loss of electricity, according to U.S. Navy spokesman Cmdr. Matthew Comer. The failure affected essential systems throughout the vessel, leaving the crew without normal access to drinking water, prepared meals, functioning toilets and air conditioning. The conditions were particularly difficult because of the summer heat and humidity in the region. Despite the prolonged disruption, the Navy reported no injuries among the crew.

Other vessels provided assistance while the destroyer’s crew dealt with the emergency. The USS Robert Smalls supplied meals, and USS Benfold was eventually towed to Subic Bay in the Philippines, arriving on July 28. Sailors were provided accommodation ashore while specialists carried out repairs and restored the ship’s systems. After inspections and technical work were completed, the destroyer returned to operations on August 8. The incident only became publicly known weeks later, after it was initially reported by USNI News and subsequently confirmed by the Navy.

The breakdown has attracted additional attention because it comes amid broader concerns over living conditions, maintenance and logistics across parts of the U.S. Navy. Lawmakers have also called for scrutiny of conditions aboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln following reports of supply shortages during an exceptionally long deployment. USS Benfold entered service in 1996 and belongs to the Arleigh Burke class, one of the main classes of guided-missile destroyers in the U.S. fleet. Although the July incident ended without casualties and the vessel returned to service, four days without normal power aboard a warship carrying hundreds of sailors demonstrates how a technical failure can rapidly become a serious operational and human challenge far from port.
