Ford has reversed part of its AI-driven strategy by bringing back more than 350 experienced engineers after discovering that artificial intelligence alone could not deliver the vehicle quality standards the company expected.
Over the past few years, the automaker invested heavily in AI-powered systems and automation to improve production efficiency and reduce development costs. However, company executives admitted that relying too heavily on artificial intelligence without sufficient human expertise created unexpected quality issues.
According to Charles Poon, Ford’s Vice President of Vehicle Hardware Engineering, the company underestimated the value of its most experienced engineers. He explained that AI is a powerful tool, but its effectiveness depends entirely on the quality of the knowledge used to train it. Without decades of practical engineering experience, automated systems were unable to identify many potential design and manufacturing problems.
The returning engineers—many of whom previously worked for Ford or its suppliers—are now responsible for mentoring younger employees, reviewing vehicle designs and helping improve the company’s AI systems. Their expertise has already contributed to significant improvements in production quality and a reduction in warranty and recall costs.
Ford’s renewed focus on combining human experience with artificial intelligence has produced encouraging results. The company recently achieved its highest ranking in the J.D. Power Initial Quality Study in more than 16 years, demonstrating that AI performs best when working alongside skilled professionals rather than replacing them.
The case is increasingly viewed as an important lesson for industries adopting artificial intelligence. While AI can significantly improve efficiency and automate complex tasks, companies are recognising that human judgment, experience and creativity remain essential for maintaining high standards in engineering and manufacturing.
