Five people were wounded in a shooting at Virginia State University in the U.S. state of Virginia early on August 15. The incident occurred shortly before 1:30 a.m. near the Quad Annexes student housing area on Boisseau Street. One of the victims is in critical condition, while the injuries suffered by the other four are not considered life-threatening. All five were taken to hospitals for treatment. The university initially placed the entire campus under lockdown and instructed students and staff to remain in secure locations. The incident occurred at a particularly sensitive time for the university, as students were returning to campus for the new academic year. Virginia State University had recently welcomed more than 1,000 new students as part of its orientation programme, with fall semester classes scheduled to begin on Monday, August 17.
Virginia State University is a historically Black university located in Ettrick, near Petersburg and south of Richmond, with approximately 5,700 students. This is not the first shooting in the area in recent years. In August 2024, four people were wounded in another shooting at the university, although officials said at the time that neither the victims nor the two suspects arrested were current VSU students. There is currently no indication that the 2024 incident is connected to the latest shooting. Authorities have not reported an ongoing immediate threat following the lifting of the lockdown, but the investigation remains active and further information is expected as police establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
