Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that Ankara expects the European Union to restart Turkey’s accession process and give new momentum to membership negotiations that have remained stalled for years.
During meetings with European leaders, Erdogan stressed that Turkey remains a key strategic partner for Europe in the fields of security, defence, migration and trade. He argued that the time has come for relations between Ankara and Brussels to enter a new phase.
The Turkish president called for the reactivation of accession mechanisms and the resumption of formal negotiations, expressing confidence that closer cooperation would benefit both Turkey and the European Union.
Turkey officially opened EU accession negotiations in 2005, but progress has been limited due to disagreements over the rule of law, human rights and democratic reforms.
Despite the challenges, Ankara continues to describe full EU membership as one of its main foreign policy objectives while seeking stronger political and economic cooperation with the bloc.
