If you spend most of your working day sitting at a desk, standing up and moving regularly may be one of the simplest ways to protect your long-term health. New research suggests that short movement breaks throughout the day can improve circulation, reduce fatigue and lower the risk of several chronic diseases.

Health experts recommend avoiding long, uninterrupted periods of sitting. The most effective routine appears to be standing up every 30 to 60 minutes and spending 3 to 5 minutes walking, stretching or performing light exercises. Recent studies found that a five-minute walk every hour provides an excellent balance between health benefits and maintaining productivity at work.

Even brief movement has a measurable impact. Walking to refill a water bottle, climbing a flight of stairs, stretching your back and shoulders or simply walking around the office helps reactivate muscles, improve blood flow and reduce stiffness caused by prolonged sitting. Researchers have also linked these “movement breaks” to improved concentration, better mood and increased energy levels.

Sitting for many hours each day has been associated with a higher risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, back pain and poor posture. Importantly, experts warn that a daily workout alone does not completely eliminate the health risks of remaining seated for long periods. Regular movement throughout the workday is just as important.

Simple habits can make a big difference. Setting a reminder every hour, taking phone calls while walking, using the stairs instead of the lift or performing a few light stretches at your desk are practical ways to stay active without interrupting your workflow.

Researchers emphasize that these small changes, combined with at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week, can significantly improve long-term health and reduce the harmful effects of a sedentary lifestyle.
