China Takes the Lead in Nuclear Fusion Race With Major Technological Breakthrough

China has achieved another significant milestone in the global race to develop commercial nuclear fusion, with scientists reporting a breakthrough that could accelerate the development of virtually limitless clean energy and strengthen the country’s position ahead of Europe and the United States.

Researchers working on China’s Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST), often referred to as the country’s “artificial sun,” successfully maintained stable plasma at densities previously believed impossible to sustain. The achievement overcomes one of fusion energy’s most difficult technical barriers and brings commercial fusion power a step closer.

The breakthrough challenges Europe’s long-standing leadership in fusion research. While the European Union continues to play a central role through the ITER project in France, analysts note that China’s investment in fusion technology is now significantly higher. According to European Parliament research, private fusion investment in China is estimated to be around 30 times greater than in the European Union.

Chinese authorities have made controlled nuclear fusion a national strategic priority under the country’s current Five-Year Plan. Alongside the EAST reactor, Beijing is rapidly developing next-generation facilities such as the HL-3 and the China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (CFETR), both designed to move fusion technology closer to commercial electricity production.

Scientists caution that commercial fusion power remains years away, as engineers must still solve challenges involving continuous operation, energy efficiency and reactor materials. Nevertheless, the latest results are widely regarded as one of the most important advances in fusion research in recent years and could help shape future reactors around the world, including the international ITER programme.

If China maintains its current pace of investment and technological progress, experts believe it could become one of the first countries to commercialize nuclear fusion—an achievement that would transform global energy production and significantly reshape the balance of technological leadership in the decades ahead.
