China Loses Communications Satellite After Long March 7A Rocket Failure

China suffered a failed space launch on August 10, 2026, after a Long March 7A carrier rocket broke apart shortly after lifting off from the Wenchang Space Launch Site on the southern island province of Hainan. The rocket launched at approximately 8:02 p.m. local time carrying the ChinaSat-4B, also known as Zhongxing-4B, communications satellite. About 85 seconds after liftoff, launch footage showed the rocket breaking apart and producing a large fireball. China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency confirmed that an anomaly occurred during the flight and that the mission had failed. Chinese authorities have launched an investigation, and no official cause of the accident has yet been announced. Analysis of launch footage indicates that the vehicle was destroyed at a relatively low altitude and speed, meaning neither the satellite nor significant debris from the mission reached orbit.

ChinaSat-4B was a communications satellite intended for telecommunications and broadcasting services. The Long March 7A is primarily designed to carry relatively heavy payloads into higher orbits, including geostationary transfer orbit. The August 10 mission marked another rare failure for the rocket, which had completed more than a dozen successful missions following the failure of its maiden flight in March 2020. The latest accident is therefore a significant technical setback for the programme, but on its own it does not indicate a broader failure of China’s space industry. Launch failures remain an inherent risk of spaceflight and have occurred throughout the history of virtually every major national and commercial space programme. The exact significance of the latest failure will depend largely on what investigators determine caused the vehicle to break apart and whether modifications are required before the Long March 7A returns to flight.

The accident comes as China continues to rapidly expand its activities in space, including satellite networks, lunar exploration and the development of a new generation of reusable launch vehicles. These programmes, however, should not be treated as a single project. The Long March 7A involved in the August 10 accident is not a reusable rocket, and its failure is not directly connected to reusable launch vehicles being developed by Chinese commercial companies. Reuters also reports that the accident is not expected to affect China’s planned Chang’e-7 lunar mission because that spacecraft is scheduled to launch aboard a different vehicle, the more powerful Long March 5. The full consequences of the Long March 7A failure will become clearer once the technical investigation is completed. As of August 11, the confirmed facts are that the rocket experienced an in-flight anomaly shortly after launch, the ChinaSat-4B mission was lost and Chinese authorities are investigating the cause.
