Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has officially entered Japan’s highly competitive minicar segment with the launch of the all-new Racco, an ultra-compact electric vehicle developed specifically for Japanese drivers. The model marks the first time a foreign automaker has designed a dedicated electric “kei car” for Japan, taking direct aim at a market traditionally dominated by domestic brands such as Nissan, Suzuki and Honda.

The Racco is priced from 1.95 million yen before taxes and government incentives, allowing many buyers to purchase the entry-level version for less than 2 million yen after available subsidies. The vehicle offers a driving range of up to 320 kilometres on a single charge, sliding rear doors, a spacious cabin and fast-charging capability, making it well suited for Japan’s crowded cities and narrow streets.

Japan’s kei car segment represents roughly one-third to 40 percent of all new vehicle sales and benefits from favourable tax policies, making it one of the country’s most important automotive categories. BYD hopes the new model will significantly increase its presence in Japan, where the company has sold just over 7,400 passenger vehicles since entering the market in 2023. The automaker has set a target of selling 10,000 Racco models by the end of 2026.

Industry analysts believe the launch signals a new phase of competition in Japan’s electric vehicle market. While Japanese manufacturers continue to dominate the domestic automotive industry, BYD’s aggressive pricing strategy and growing technological capabilities are expected to intensify competition as demand for affordable electric mobility continues to grow.
