Filipina tennis sensation Alexandra Eala produced one of the biggest upsets of Wimbledon 2026 by defeating defending champion and world No. 3 Iga Swiatek in straight sets, 7-6(9), 6-2, to advance to the fourth round of the tournament.
The 21-year-old delivered an outstanding performance on Centre Court, saving two set points in a dramatic opening-set tiebreak before taking complete control of the match. Eala’s aggressive baseline game and confident shot-making left the reigning champion struggling to find answers.
With the victory, Eala became the first player from the Philippines to reach the second week of a Grand Slam tournament, marking another historic milestone in her rapidly rising career. The win was also her seventh career victory over a Top 10 opponent and her second triumph against Swiatek.
Swiatek entered the tournament as one of the favourites after winning the Wimbledon title last year, but she was unable to match Eala’s intensity. The Polish star committed a series of unforced errors, while Eala remained composed during the key moments of the contest.
After securing match point, an emotional Eala celebrated the biggest Grand Slam victory of her career. She thanked her team and supporters, saying that reaching the second week of Wimbledon was a dream come true.
Eala will now face Italy’s Jasmine Paolini for a place in the quarter-finals, as she continues one of the most remarkable breakthrough runs of this year’s Wimbledon Championships.
