Alcohol and Heat: How to Stay Safe During Summer

Health experts are warning that combining alcohol with high summer temperatures can significantly increase the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Alcohol acts as a diuretic, causing the body to lose more fluids. At the same time, hot weather increases sweating, making dehydration develop much faster. This combination can lead to dizziness, headaches, low blood pressure and, in severe cases, life-threatening heat-related illness.

Doctors recommend drinking plenty of water before and after consuming alcohol, avoiding excessive drinking during the hottest hours of the day, eating before drinking and staying in shaded or air-conditioned areas whenever possible. Low- or non-alcoholic beverages are considered a safer option during periods of extreme heat.

Medical specialists also advise avoiding strenuous physical activity after drinking alcohol, as the combination of heat and alcohol places additional stress on the heart and reduces the body’s ability to regulate its temperature. People with heart disease, older adults and those with chronic illnesses are considered particularly vulnerable.
